Why use DOIs?

We use the ISBN already; why add another identifier?

  • New publication types and formats require new identifiers.

The DOI System provides a scheme for the unique identification of publications which have no other standard identifier (e.g. individual chapters and parts of books). By applying DOIs to individual items of content, publishers can identify and sell these items in e-commerce systems.

  • The DOI System provides persistent Internet linking.

The DOI System is a convenient and manageable infrastructure that provides access over time to Internet resources that have been moved or renamed. Since DOIs can be centrally maintained, any other sites linking to your resources can continue to do so even when you have to relocate or rename them.

  • DOI’s are “actionable” and allow you to direct customers.

You choose the destination of the link pointer and can readily change it without undue time or effort.
